I manage fourteen employees. I have to deal with objectives and projects on one end and arguments amongst staff, employees’ personal issues and performance evaluations on the other. Is there an easier way to manage?
The verb manage dates back to the 16th century from the Italian maneggiare (to handle — especially a horse), which in turn derives from the Latin manus (hand). In between the lines of your question lies the heart of your dilemma. By mentally separating between objectives and projects on one side and employees on the other you’re magnifying the scale and nature of your managerial duties. Your job is to “handle” all such issues together. You can’t achieve your objectives and projects without a strong dedicated team. Teams are made of people (not horses). They have their own objectives, issues, aspirations, anxieties and needs.
