two cents: no brilliant employees in Kuwait?
As published on Bazaar Magazine monthly article: Loaay’s Two Cents
When I look at my company I find that 95% of my staff is average. No spark, no creativity and no outstanding performance. Is it possible that we just don’t have brilliant employees in Kuwait anymore?
Imagine if next week all your employees are replaced by Geniuses. I’m talking about first class, top of the line, creative excellence mixed with dynamic strategic thinking. Then, let’s examine your work: You have operations, logistics, warehousing, maintenance and other jobs that need to be done day in day out to keep the business up and running. Your “star” employees would not want to do data entry, stock monitoring and technical checks. They see themselves as Movers and Shakers, not Doers. They’re the thinkers that inspire, supervise and direct others. They’re not the ones who wake up at 4:00AM to be at the warehouse by 5:30AM to receive the new goods.
Movers and Shakers are not easy to manage. They’re moody, demanding and hard to please. They’re expensive to keep and don’t stay for long at any firm regardless of how much they’re paid. They get bored fairly quickly. No company can afford to hire such a quality of staff as the majority, nor should they. You need soldiers to keep the engine up and running without much fuss; as long as they’re being looked after and treated with respect. The combination of both is essential. You need the Thinkers to drive the direction forward. They are visionaries by nature. Some of your Directors or even your CEO could be with such qualities. Managers and employees need to be the machine that will get the company moving towards its vision. Without them, how good is your dream team?
Having said that, you need to inject a small percentage of Junior Geniuses amongst the Doers because they are the leaders of tomorrow and need to start somewhere. How can you spot them? They’re usually the ones that give you most trouble and push for changing processes all the time. They question each task. They ask “What if…” questions. They’re trouble in the eyes of inexperienced managers. In reality, they’re just Movers and Shakers who have just started their careers and are practicing what they know by nature, moving and shaking things for the better…and that’s just my two cents.
