two cents: motivating staff in tough times
As published on Bazaar Magazine monthly article: Loaay’s Two Cents
How do you motivate staff when you can’t give them money and promotions are not possible at the moment?
Incentives can take various shapes. While money works with different positions like Sales and C levels, there has been a growing interest by management in the US and Europe to consider non-monetary incentives. A recent study in the US shows that employees are spending more time at home than before. So, managers started to give incentives that can be used at home. From Healthy food packages and grocery stores credit to computer accessories and electronic appliances, just look around your home. However, when cash is sparse, such items are a luxury.
Small treats don’t get enough credit often. Movie tickets, a drink and dessert voucher from a chain coffee shop or a chocolate box can all be within KD5 more or less. Talk to HR or Management to approve extra cash. For a zero budget, you can give flexible hours to be used when needed or even a monthly competition where the winner can be the manager for a day (just within your department). The key is to use these treats as rewards after they’ve done their tasks not before. Such surprises will make coming to work more enjoyable. Your best ideas will come from them. The more you get to know them, the more smiles you’ll see when you give them their rewards…and that’s just my two cents.
